Neither did the episcopal consecrations of 1988 have episcopal approval, and yet Benedict lifted the excommunication of the four bishops without their repenting. So, were the four bishops, and Archbisops Lefebvre and Mayer, really in the wrong? If so, why lift the excommunication, Benedict? If not, why worry about a coming excommunication?
