Instead, he published a 'Declaration of Faith', stating that it represents “the minimum indispensable to be in communion with the Church, and to truly call ourselves Catholics and, consequently, your sons”. Today the Church celebrates the Ascension of Our Lord into Heaven. And there’s a powerful little moment in the traditional liturgy that a lot of Catholics today have never even noticed. After the Gospel is read, the Paschal Candle is extinguished. Why? Because the Paschal Candle represents the visible presence of the risen Christ among His disciples after Easter. For forty days, Our Lord walked among them, taught them, ate with them, and appeared to them after His Resurrection. But on Ascension Thursday, Christ ascends bodily into Heaven. So the candle is put out as a sign that Jesus is no longer visibly present on earth in the same way He was before. He has ascended to the right hand of the Father. Now of course, this does not mean Christ “left” the Church. Far from it. He is still truly with us in the Blessed Sacrament, in His Church, and through the Holy Ghost.
